As a white girl, pulling off the “Asian Look” can be tricky. Here to help me show you how I pull off the trend in vintage Asian-influenced outfits are two fabulous friends of mine: Anna and Lindsay. You will remember them both from last Falls coverage of the Grunge Trend on GingerSnaps.
On the left, Anna is wearing a vintage traditional kimono dress and vintage hat. To add a dash of sparkle and color, I layered rhinestone clip-ons over a pair of vintage earrings. Even though my ears are pierced, I love the versatility of clip-on earrings. Sometimes I will clip smaller ones to the top of my ears like a cuff, and sometimes I clip them to my shoes and wear them as shoe clips (more examples of How I Wear Vintage Clip-on Earrings on My Shoes in this DIY Post from last year). The black MCM bag has just the right amount of gold stitching and complements the gold buttons on her Louboutin Booties.
The dress I am wearing, while made from the embroidered satin material typical of traditional Asian Dress, has a non-traditional cut and modern, short hemline. Everything I am wearing, with the exception of the shoes by Cynthia Rowley, is vintage. I love these oversized gold earrings from the 80’s, especially when I am wearing my hair back in a chignon. See how I styled them a different way in this OOTD from the earliest days of Ginger Snaps.
On the right, Lindsay is also wearing a slight variation to the traditional Asian Dress. While made from the traditional fabric, it is cut like a wrap dress. Her jewelry is all from Forever 21, her purse is vintage, and her shoes are from TopShop.
