Last week marked the day of birth of one of my favorite guest models on GingerSnaps Blog: The beautiful Alyona! Incidentally, she is also one of YOUR favorites, too.
Alyona was first featured in my coverage of Gatsby Flapper Fashion back in May when the movie of the summer, The Great Gatsby, premiered. You can check her out in a blue feathered frock and head scarf in The Great, Great Gatsby (Part One) as well as in a sheer floral dress and head jewelry from India in The Great, Great Gatsby (Part Two). If you still can’t get enough of the beautiful and ever-so-photogenic Birthday Girl, check out the photos below and (my FAVORITE) post of Alyonas’ SLAMMING BODY in a Retro 1960’s BIKINI!
I cannot wait to shoot with Miss Alyona again; in honor of her birthday, I decided to post the last of our 1920’s inspired outfits from our shoot this past summer.
I find women dressed as men incredibly sexy. Perhaps Whitney Houston summed it up best when she claimed,
“I like being a woman, even in a mans world. After all, men can’t wear dresses, but we can wear the pants!”
If I were a lesbian, I would be a hybrid lipstick lesbian like Portia de Rossi who pulls of mens fashion in the sexiest, most feminine way. But, I digress…
Being a woman dressed as a man is particularly fun when you get to channel Jay Gatsby like I am in today’s OOTD post. The dapper fashion from gentlemen in the Jazz Age especially lends itself to the female frame. Remember Ralph Laurens’ Gatsby-Inspired Runway Collection a few springs back? I love how so many of his ladies were dressed chicly as men (see below).
While the blazer and tie take my look in the masculine direction, the ruffled, sheer blouse and the short hem of the shorts keep the balance. I always incorporate at least one distinctly feminine element in my ‘girl-gone-guy” looks. While a classic slicked-back pony tail is always chic when dressing as a man (particularly when wearing a pant suit), I like to switch things up and keep my hair down. I found irony in, instead, having Alyona in a slicked-back androgynous hair style. The open-toe heeled oxfords I am wearing are the perfect accessory for a balanced masculine look.
By the way, Forever 21 is my GO-TO for accessories (you can see them in just about every one of my posts) For a limited time, GingerSnaps Readers get 75% OFF ACCESSORIES! Click the link below to start shopping!
Every guy needs his girl, and Alyona is the perfect Daisy to my Gatsby in a sexy vintage gown that is dripping with beaded fringe. As a vintage lover, you must accept the unfortunate reality that from time-to-time a piece is found that could stand the test of time. This is particularly common in beaded and sequined pieces, so be careful to check over a piece carefully before purchasing and ALWAYS try it on to see how the embellishments stand up to movement. The dress Alyona is wearing I purchased on eBay and, while beautiful, it is unfortunately falling apart. On the bright side, the spontaneously falling strings of beads add dramatic effect and you can be certain you won’t go unnoticed.
I paired the dress with a beautiful two-tone fur stole that was created from vintage repurposed fur. With the exception of gifts, I have a personal policy of only buying vintage or re-purposed fur. Thankfully, this is becoming easier and easier to do! For more on this issue, check out my previous post about the Fur Controversy.
Hope you enjoy todays OOTD Flapper Fashion and a VERY Happy Birthday to Alyona, again!
