OOTD: Snow Storm Chic

_DSF9463-Edit

Remember the blizzard that never was about a month ago?  Little did we know, it would be the first of several snow days this winter.  It was on that day that I had the wild idea to shoot this outfit from the balcony of my apartment.  (I promise you I am colder than I look!)  My photographer Chris Knight was such a good sport and I’m in love with the results.  Like they say, the show must go on… right?

It’s difficult to stay chic in the kind of weather we north easterners have been having this winter.  I have a few tips for staying chic in a snow storm:

1.  It’s all about layering.  I am a champion of layering turtlenecks under everything.  H&M and Forever 21 always offer great lycra versions that layer really nicely under any dress or top.  It’s a great way to wear your summer dresses all year round.

2.  Wool-lined tights are PURE MAGIC!  In particular, I love these cashmere lined tights.  They are slightly more opaque than leggings and layer more seamlessly under fitted dresses.  But, the BEST thing about them is their SOFTNESS.  In the winter, warm, soft fabrics make all the difference.

3.  COLOR COLOR COLOR!  Don’t forget to still incorporate pops of color and stay away from the drab, all black uniform; it’s dreary and colorless enough already.  In particular, I recommend investing in a colorful coat.  eBay is an endless source of vintage versions, but here are a few of my favorites in retail now (and most likely on sale).  For more ideas on how to style colorful coats, check out this post from last year chronicling my various colorful coats.

This outfit is all about one of my favorite colors— purple.  I love all hues of this color and I wear them all year round.  The outfit is also a testament to my habit of marrying the vintage with the modern as well as the high with low (cost).  The coat, hat, necklace, earrings, bag, and leg warmers are all vintage!  In fact, the leg warmers were handed down to me by my stylish mother.  Both the dress and the shoes are modern.  The mini-dress is an oldie from Forever 21.  In fact, I had this dress seven years ago when I moved to NYC!  The cheapie Forever 21 dress pairs with the extravagant shoes by Christian Lacroix… These shoes are one of my favorite pairs; you can check out another way I wore them in this post about Glitter and Grunge.
