Maybe it was the funky part art-deco, part 40’s cat-eye frames… or maybe it was the skinny pencil skirts, pointy-toe stilettos, and bright red lips… Whatever the culprit, Prabal Gurung Spring 2014 Collection at New York Fashion Week invoked Retro Vibes from yester-year while maintaining careful attention to modern, cutting-edge design that is distinctly Prabal Gurung. Here are my favorite highlights from the show.
Sheer Sexiness was mastered in this collection. Sometimes it was a full sheer pencil skirt, other times sheer was found in dramatic detail once the model turned to show us the back of the garment. More eye-catching than provocative and, even in the sheerest of situations, he balances with tasteful structure and fit.
Blues abound in this collection. In comparison to other designers this year, the color selection was spot-on. No pepto-bismol pinks and purples, no candy-sweet, overly-robins egg blues either. I especially love the pointy-toe stilettos in this hue.
After watching a monotonous army of models, show after show marching down the runway in Black and White, his splashes of bold color on a black and white printed background was most welcome and refreshing.
Even his strictly black and white look has character and distinction. The peek of the printed brasier. The unexpected purple lip– flawless!
